Dispatch Pro: Your Questions Answered

Female 9-1-1 dispatcher wearing a headset and handling emergency calls as part of PLS Dispatch Pro training.

Communication centers evaluating dispatcher continuing education programs tend to ask the same questions. Here is a straightforward look at what quality dispatcher training involves and what to expect from PLS Dispatch Pro.

What does each lesson cover?

Each lesson is built around a real 9-1-1 call. Dispatchers listen to the recording and work through an analysis of the dispatcher’s questioning techniques, situational awareness, professionalism, public safety awareness, and customer service skills. They also learn what happened after the call ended, information dispatchers rarely have in practice.

Beyond the call itself, lessons cover topics related to the call like mental illness, technology, current events, and relevant legal considerations. An attorney’s perspective on liability is included in every lesson, as is a dispatcher mental health section developed by a licensed clinical social worker.

Lessons run approximately one hour and include a ten-question final exam at the end. Upon completion, a certificate of completion is available for the dispatcher’s training file.

What recertification credit does Dispatch Pro satisfy?

Dispatch Pro qualifies for continuing education credit in most states. Agencies with questions about their specific training requirements should contact PLS directly. Dispatch Pro also satisfies continuing education requirements for APCO and IAED certifications including, but not limited to:

  • Fire Service Communications (FSC)
  • Law Enforcement Communications (LEC)
  • Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD)
  • Emergency Telecommunicator (ETC)
  • Emergency Fire Dispatch (EFD)
  • Emergency Police Dispatch (EPD)

How do agencies typically use the training?

Most agencies require dispatchers to complete one lesson per month by a set date. After all staff have finished, many supervisors run a group discussion using the questions

provided with each lesson. Supervisors consistently identify that discussion as one of the most valuable parts of the program. When everyone completes the same lesson in the same period, it creates a shared reference point that drives retention and surfaces policy or dispatch protocol conversations worth having.

Is it a good fit for smaller or rural agencies?

Yes! Dispatchers at smaller agencies often work with a narrower range of call types. Dispatch Pro exposes them to situations they may rarely encounter like active shooters, baby deliveries, excited delirium, etc. With Dispatch Pro, dispatchers can build decision making skills before those calls come in.
