IOWA ONLINE LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING
Equip officers with the knowledge and skills to make good decisions with PLS Legal Update, an online state-specific training system. Our comprehensive and interactive lessons are written to provide officers in Iowa with legal update, technical, and interpersonal skills training. We aim to reduce liability exposure and foster confident and effective decision-making, keeping officers current on recent and relevant state and federal court cases.
PLS Legal Update training can be used to satisfy Iowa Law Enforcement Academy continuing education requirements.
PLS Legal Update is exclusively designed for law enforcement officers in Iowa. Our lessons cater to specific challenges in your state and highlight state-specific cases from local law enforcement agencies, ensuring a focused and tailed learning experience.

16 hours of online training (including de-escalation) comprised of:
- at least 4 hours of legal update training, based on recent cases from the Iowa Supreme Court, the Iowa Court of Appeals, the U.S. Supreme Court, and the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals;
- 1 hour of legal update training based on recent Iowa legislation;
- 1 hour of mental health training per 501 IAC 8.1(1)(g);
- 4 hours of de-escalation training per Iowa Code § 80B.11G & 501 IAC 8.1(1)(f);
- other applicable training
PACKAGE B: 12-Hour Package without De-escalation
12 hours of online training (not including de-escalation) comprised of:
- at least 4 hours of legal update training, based on recent cases from the Iowa Supreme Court, the Iowa Court of Appeals, the U.S. Supreme Court, and the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals;
- 1 hour of legal update training based on recent Iowa legislation;
- 1 hour of mental health training per 501 IAC 8.1(1)(g);
- other applicable training
This package does not include de-escalation training.
PACKAGE C: 12-Hour Package with De-escalation
12 Hours of online training (including de-escalation) comprised of:
- at least 4 hours of legal update training, based on recent cases from the Iowa Supreme Court, the Iowa Court of Appeals, the U.S. Supreme Court, and the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals;
- 1 hour of legal update training based on recent Iowa legislation;
- 1 hour of mental health training per 501 IAC 8.1(1)(g);
- 4 hours of de-escalation training per Iowa Code § 80B.11G & 501 IAC 8.1(1)(f);

Optional Additions
Agencies may elect to add any of the following lessons to their packages.

PLS has obtained Iowa Law Enforcement Academy approval of the following curriculum: bloodborne pathogens; hazardous materials & hazard communication; mental health; bias prevention and de-escalation.
